Adif is making progress with the modernisation works on the Figueres–Portbou section, including signalling improvements through the implementation of the Automatic Bidirectional Block System (BAB), in an initiative in which INSE RAIL is participating together with AITREN.
The INSE RAIL–AITREN Figueres Portbou Joint Venture (UTE), equally owned by both companies, is providing technical assistance services for the supervision and monitoring of the BAB installation works, including construction supervision, quality control, monitoring of the works and activities associated with commissioning.
The new system will allow trains to operate in both directions on either of the two tracks with the same operating conditions, providing greater flexibility and operational efficiency while contributing to improved capacity, reliability and traffic regularity.
The project includes the installation of new interlockings, axle-counter-based train detection systems, ASFA Digital and new fixed and LED light signalling, as well as their integration into the Centralised Traffic Control (CTC) system.
This project forms part of the set of investments currently being carried out by Adif on the Figueres–Portbou section, together with the renewal of the overhead contact line, with a combined investment of more than €34 million.
