Adif has recently put out to tender a new phase of improvement works at the Madrid stations of Embajadores and Laguna, as part of the modernisation plan for Madrid’s C-5 commuter rail line. The works include, among other measures, platform extensions and new actions to improve accessibility, evacuation and ventilation in the event of fire.
In the case of Embajadores underground station, this new phase continues the works aimed at improving safety and evacuation conditions that Adif has been carrying out at the station, in which INSE RAIL has played an active role.
INSE RAIL’s track record in this field began with the contract awarded in 2020, as part of a temporary joint venture (UTE), for the preparation of the construction projects required to improve evacuation and ventilation conditions in the event of fire at the underground commuter rail stations of Embajadores, Getafe Centro and Parla.
Subsequently, in January 2025, INSE RAIL was awarded the technical assistance contract for the supervision of the construction works corresponding to the priority actions to improve evacuation and ventilation conditions at Embajadores station (Phase I), further strengthening its involvement in the development of these works. The construction works have now been completed.
According to Adif, the works currently being completed in this first phase have significantly improved the station’s safety conditions through the compartmentalisation of the platform cavern, the creation of four pressurised protected lobbies, the implementation of refuge areas for people with reduced mobility, and the renewal of various detection and fire-extinguishing systems.
The new phase includes the construction of four new emergency exits, equipped with the corresponding fire protection and safety systems, which will increase the number of evacuation points from the platforms from four to eight. The platforms will also be extended, lengthening the station’s existing cavern by 30 metres, while various fire protection, signalling, lighting, communications and security systems will be renewed and integrated.
These works form part of the modernisation process of Madrid’s C-5 commuter rail line, one of the busiest lines on the network, and highlight the importance of continuing to improve the safety, accessibility and functionality of its infrastructure.
For INSE RAIL, its involvement in the different phases of the works at Embajadores station represents another example of its experience in railway engineering projects related to the safety, evacuation and protection of complex railway infrastructure, as well as its ability to support the client throughout both the design and construction phases.
