The project awarded by ADIF to Inse Rail, as part of a joint venture, will eliminate 12 grade crossings, increase the permeability of the infrastructure and minimize the possibility of flooding in the municipality, according to the informational study approved by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.
After a preliminary analysis of construction solutions, the project will develop a railway bypass that will connect the Bilbao-Balmaseda and Santander-Bilbao lines, freeing up more than a kilometer of track through the city center and eliminating grade crossings. In addition, the existing stop in Aranguren will be replaced with a new one.
The project will also include actions on two railway bridges that cross the Cadagua River, near the Aranguren stop. One of these will be dismantled, and the span (space between piers) will be extended to increase its water capacity, integrating the improvements to the waterway planned by the Basque Water Agency (URA).
These operations will be carried out in coordination with the URA, which also carries out flood protection actions in the area, specifically from the shallows located near the Aranguren station track yard to the commercial area of the Baular neighborhood.
The drafting of this project, as well as the later execution of the works by Adif, is part of the protocol signed by the Ministry of Transport, Adif, the Basque Water Agency and the Zalla City Council.
