The Baños de Agua Santa hydroelectric project, with a capacity of 29.2 MW, is located in the district of Baños de Agua Santa in the province of Tungurahua and will use the Topo River’s flow of 15 m3/s to obtain its power. As a medium-sized project that does not use fossil fuels, it falls into the unconventional low-environmental impact category: it is designed to cover 1% of the country’s energy demands, providing electricity Ecuadorian communities, populations, and families.

In this project, Inse Rail provided the Project Management for the construction of the Hydroelectric Plant, with services including coordination with the client and the more than 20 contractors and entities that participated in the works, review of the detailed project design and proposed modifications, review and approval of project supplies, ongoing tracking of the planning and the risks associated with the project, budgetary and financial tracking of the works, supervision of quality and environmental assurance and control, as well as occupational risk prevention supervision.

The principal elements of the project for which the Project Management was provided were:

  • Intake opening for flow of 20m³/s
  • Desander
  • Tank with 1,000m³ capacity
  • 500 m underground GRP pressure pipe with 160 m drop
  • Tunnel 500 m long
  • Power house
  • Auxiliary equipment
  • Two Francis turbines 15MW/each and Alternator
  • 13.8/138 KV step-up substation
  • Isolator substation 138 KV
  • 138 KV high-voltage feed-in line 7.5 km long.
